Back in December 2012 I told you about a web site from Air Services Australia, that could track (on delay) aircraft movements in Australia.
The horrible shooting down of a Malaysian Airline MH17 has alerted me to a similar website, Flightradar24, that offers real-time live tracking of large aircraft all over the world.
According to their “About Us” page, Flightradar24;
“…has become very popular and each month Flightradar24.com gets more than 10 million visits and our apps have been downloaded more than 2 million times.
The technology we use to receive flight information from aircraft is called ADS-B. Roughly 60% of all passenger aircraft around the world are equipped with an ADS-B transponder. The majority of the data displayed on Flightradar24.com and in our apps is gathered through a network of 500+ ADS-B receivers around the world.
In addition to ADS-B data, we also display data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This data provides full coverage of the airspace above the United States and Canada….”
Their service might be a little slow at the moment, thanks to the huge traffic on their servers the MH17 disaster has generated, but this is a great site for more than just the aviation geeks out there.
Check it out… www.flightradar24.com
