You cant call the NBN the NBN anymore

Back in July 2013 I posted a link to How Fast Is the NBN, a site which compared the real differences between each major Australian political party’s Broadband policy.  Well now there has been a change of government, and the official NBN policy has significantly changed.  It's not just the roll out of fibre to the “Node” rather than your premises, for a lot of the country it means being stuck with the ageing copper phone lines, meaning they have no hope of fast broadband in the foreseeable future.

For the non techie, this can be difficult to comprehend, but this is a real mess!  Don’t bother going to the NBNco web site for answers, although it still boasts about super-fast internet for Australia, there is a disclaimer on every page which reads;  “This website is currently under review, pending the introduction of new Government policy.  Some content may not be current. You should not rely solely on this information.”

Technology web site Delimiter have posted an extensive article explaining the outlook for broadband internet in Australia.  They’ve even declared they will no longer refer to the National Broadband Network (or NBN), because under current policy it wont be National (and in some regional areas the tern “Broadband” may not even be accurate) instead they will refer to “the Coalition’s Broadband Network”.

The Delimiter article is long, but if you have any interest in Australia’s internet infrastructure or political landscape, then this is well worth the read.

So grab a cuppa and check it out…
