The New Daily

Traditional print newspapers around the world are struggling with low circulation and low revenue.  Back in the day, classified advertising used to bring in huge revenue for newspapers, but the online world of ebay, Amazon and countless others have dried up the cash flow of tradition daily print media.  Many newspapers have embraced the internet with their content also available online, but with various pricing models to allow readers to access their digital articles.  In this day and age, many consumers are unwilling to pay for access to online newspaper articles, instead choosing to look for free alternatives.

One such free source of online news for Australians is “The New Daily”.  The site is funded with support from the superannuation industry, along with on unobtrusive screen advertising.  Their “about” page explains further…

“The New Daily is a trusted source of national news and information and is provided free for all Australians. The site is backed by members of the Industry Super Funds network, including Australian Super, Cbus and Industry Super Holdings and is produced by Motion Publishing, whose directors include former Herald Sun and The Age editor, Bruce Guthrie, and digital publishing pioneer, Eric Beecher. It aims to provide fair, balanced and unbiased coverage of major events around the world and across Australia. Our team of top editors and journalists, headed by Thomas Hunter, publishes throughout the day across desktop, social, mobile and tablet.”

I personally found the site well laid out and easy to navigate.  It even has a newspaper feel to it with headlines and black on white text, but with a modern interactive web site design.
