Hinch wants Megan’s Law for Australia

A little over 12 months ago I told you about “Human Headline”, the website of Australian journalist Derryn Hinch.

Hinch has a long history of speaking out about, and naming, sex offenders – even when it meant breaking the law.  Hinch is currently pushing to change Australian law, to bring us into line with the United States, so that communities can know where convicted sex offenders reside, and protect their children accordingly.

Some worry people will become vigilantes and attack these convicted sex offenders, its not about that (it doesn't happen in the US) its about protecting the most vulnerable members of our community.  As a parent, when my kids ask if they can go to a house and collect a ball that’s gone over the fence, I’d like to know I’m not letting them go into the home of a convicted paedophile.  If these convicted offenders mind their own business, I don’t care where they live – they’ve served their time after all – but I don’t want to give them the opportunity to re-offend.

Hinch has started a petition he will take to the Australian Prime Minister, to hopefully change the law.  My name’s on the petition, I hope yours will be too.
